With these benefits, plus the option for flexible schedules, we'll support you as you pursue a balanced, fulfilling life-at work and at home. **Overview:** The Systems Engineer will provide Systems Engineering & Integration technical support to the Space Launch System (SLS) Spacecraft/Payload Integration and Evolution (SPIE) office. Tasks include support to program/project milestones and activities where products are assessed and matured, and ensuring integration happens across the Element. The engineer shall interact with senior project personnel at MSFC, prime contractors, other NASA centers, industry, and academia. **Responsibilities:** Systems Engineering and Integration technical support includes: + Providing technical expertise to support the SPIE management in the role of the USA Resident Manager, serving as the on-site technical liason. + Coordinating and interfacing with SPIE Element Manager, Chief Engineer, Chief Safety Officer, Lead Systems Engineer, Hardware and Operations Integration Leads, and Engineering Design Lead Engineers, as well as providing technical leadership, guidance, and recommendations in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. + Providing technical support to ensure that disciplines are communicating design, issues, interfaces, analyses, and configuration; performing vertical integration among vehicle-level, Element, subsystem, and component products; and performing horizontal integration with other Elements to ensure consistency across the Program; and providing recommendations to SPIE senior management on critical decisions. + Supporting Element and/or subsystem design trades and analysis necessary to validate the requirements, maintain control of the design baseline, and continually track compliance of the design to the requirements during design, development, testing and evaluation. + Communicating and evaluating the development, fidelity, schedule, cost, and risk of technical products for the Element to support program/project milestones and the subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured. + Evaluating prime contractor deliverables including requirements and specifications as well as verification of allocated end item specification requirements and providing recommendations to senior management for decisions that have critical impacts to overall project implementation. + Providing input to the Element integrated schedules and developing other tracking mechanisms to manage the work and identify risks and opportunities to SPIE senior leadership which are critical to project planning, implementation, and control of the baseline. + Consulting with or leading Task Teams assigned by the SPIE Element Manager. + Representing SPIE at various meetings and interfacing with numerous contractors and government agencies. Provide other technical support of programmatic activities to SPIE personnel as needed. Duties may include, but not be limited to, the following: + Providing programmatic and technical recommendations. + Assisting in planning activities. + Supporting trade studies, contract modifications and evaluations. + Performing systems assessments. + Making technical risk management inputs. + Supporting reviews, working groups and boards. + Providing periodic status inputs to project. **Qualifications:** A degree in Engineering, Science, or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Masters with at least 3 years of experience, or BS with at least 5 years of experience. The following skills/experience are required: + Extensive experience working on technical and scheduling challenges. + Ability to integrate management and technical functions to ensure informed decisions. + Familiarity with NASA MSFC plans, processes, procedures, and requirements. + Knowledge of the NASA Systems Engineering Management Plan. + Experience in program integration and requirements development/management. + Effective communication (oral and written) skills. + Ability to work with minimal supervision. + Experience with risk concepts, management, and tracking. The following skills/experience are highly desired: + Experience in design, development, test, and evaluation of Space Systems. + An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS vehicle and interfaces. + Ability to work in a team environment, consisting of government and contractors, and build collaborative relationships within and across organizations. + Ability to work in a technical leadership role supporting government/customer interest with contractors and other NASA center organizations. + Knowledge of NASA launch vehicles, the current SLS Program and its Elements, including a working understanding of SLS Element interfaces. + Expertise or experience working in developing and delivering technical briefings used for critical decisions impacting the SPIE Project Baseline implementation. + Expertise or experience working across organizational boundaries and disciplines to identify and resolve vehicle integration issues. + Knowledge of launch vehicle programmatic planning processes and experience performing technical or management oversight of prime contractor hardware production, test, and certification efforts in support of critical decision making at the SPIE senior management level. **Essential Functions** **Work Experience** Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (10%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time(100%) **Physical Requirements** Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%). **Equipment and Machines** Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%). **Attendance** Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. **Other Essential Functions** The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
