Companies have spent years trying to crack the return-to-office problem. Better coffee. Fancier chairs. Rooftop terraces. Ping-pong tables.
And yet, employees keep choosing their couch. Maybe the problem was never about perks.
GPS Air surveyed 750 U.S. adults working in non-remote environments in March 2026. The results point to something most organizations have been overlooking entirely: the air.
Key numbers at a glance:
- 61% would choose fresher air over better amenities for a full workday
- 67% would be more willing to work in-person if their company communicated its health and comfort efforts
- 83% say visible efforts to improve workplace comfort would make them feel more respected
- 52% want weekly or always-available visibility into workplace conditions
- 83% say workplace conditions affect their confidence in leadership — 50% say that impact is very or extremely influential
You have about 10 Seconds to make a Good Impression
Before the first meeting, before the first coffee, employees have already decided how they feel about being there.

53% say temperature and airflow are the first things they notice when walking in. Not the decor. Not the snacks. The air. And that impression follows them through the entire day.
Given a Choice, Employees Pick Fresh Air Over Everything
GPS Air asked: great amenities or fresh, comfortable air?
61% chose the fresh air. Not the nicer office. Not the better perks. Just air that feels right.

And when asked what most affects their productivity, employees ranked temperature and airflow at the very top.

The amenities race was always a distraction. Comfort was the answer.
A Stuffy Room is not just a Facilities Problem
When the air feels off, employees are not just uncomfortable they are drawing conclusions about leadership.
- 69% feel the workplace is not being maintained properly
- 32% assume something is being mismanaged
- 26% feel their well-being is not a priority
- 83% say noticeable conditions affect their confidence in leadership
- 50% say that impact is very or extremely significant
Visible Effort Goes a Long Way
It does not take much to turn this around. Simply showing employees that you are taking action makes a real difference.

A stuffy room is an employee quietly losing faith.
The People with the most Flexibility Notice Everything
Hybrid workers — those coming in just one or two days a week are the hardest to convince and the easiest to lose.
51% of part-time office workers strongly notice the difference between home and office in ways that affect their comfort and productivity. Among those in the office most of the week, that number drops to 39%.
43% of hybrid workers say environmental issues make the workplace feel poorly maintained. Only 27% of full-time office workers say the same.
These employees have a choice. Right now, the home environment is winning.
They do not want a Newsletter about it. They want to see it happen.
- 66% say better ventilation would reassure them the workplace is being looked after
- 60% want regular updates on what is being done
- 52% want weekly or real-time visibility into conditions

[66% say improved ventilation, airflow, or temperature control would most reassure them that their workplace environment is being actively managed]
The most believable proof is not an email. It is a system where they flag something and watch it get fixed.

[38% say a way for employees to report issues and see follow-through would be the most believable proof that their workplace is actively managing its environment]
Talk less. Fix more. Show the work.

[66% say they would be more willing to come to work if their company communicated the steps it takes to ensure a comfortable and healthy environment]
This is not a Hard Problem to Solve
Nobody wants a five-star office. They just want to walk in and feel like someone gives a damn.
Clean air. Consistent temperature. A way to raise a concern and see it addressed.
The companies that get this right will not just have better offices. They will have people who trust them, stay longer, and actually look forward to coming in.
It starts with the air. Everything else follows.
